If you have been skiing before you may know that there is a general sense of etiquette that is followed among skiers. There are certain things you should and should not do on the slopes that will result in a good or bad time skiing. If it is your first time skiing or you want a refresher on some skiing etiquette than this article is for you. Follow these simple pointers, and you will ensure a good time on the slopes for you and the people around you.

The Right Of Way

When coming down the slope or trail while skiing the person in front of you always has the right of way. Yield to the skier that is in front of you even if they are going a slower speed than you would like. You can pass them but be aware of their movements and skill level when doing so to ensure that you pass safely and avoid any potential collision.

Smoking On The Lift

Don’t do it. An easy rule to remember, do not smoke on the lift during the ride up. Even if you are sharing the lift with a friend of yours, the people behind you will get the whiffs of smoke as well. It can be tempting to smoke on the way up to the slope but do save it for the designated smoking areas around the mountain. This way everyone around you can enjoy the ride up!

Lend A Hand

It is inevitable to see people completely wipe out when you are on the slopes. Sometimes skiers will have a yard sale and need help gathering their gear to get down the rest of the slope. A yard sale is when a skier crashes so hard that all of their gear flys off of them and sprawls out on the slope. Be a kind skier and stop to help them back up and see if they need medical assistance.

Watch Your Speed

Nobody likes a speed demon on a slope for beginners. If you are craving that need for speed, then take it to a slope that is appropriate for it. Be aware of the slope difficulty you are on and adjust your speed accordingly. Lowering your speed on a beginner course helps you and the other people on the slope. Having appropriate speed on a beginner slope will help you react faster to new-timers and give more time to people who need it when coming down the slope.
